Allium giganteum
Purple grapefruit sized head

Originally from Iran, Afghanistan and Central Asia on lower mountain slopes. A bulb that prefers a well drained and sunny situation. Tall and dense flowered it is impressive, but is not quite the giant it purports to be. The flower stems are 4-5' (120-150 cm) tall with broad basal leaves which are withered at flowering time. The flower is a dense orb formed of many purple flowers about the size of a grapefruit. Late June flowering, purple, 48" (120 cm) tall.

Planting instructions

Plant with 4-5" 10-12.5 cm) soil over the bulb, 12" (30cm) apart,  in a sunny spot in well drained soils where the leaves will be camouflaged in early summer.
