Creamy white star-shaped flowers form a loose pyramid, at the top of a 36" (90cm) stem. These tall spikes with long narrow leaves are especially effective in a border in front of a dark background. This is a form of C. leichtlinii, which grows wild in western USA in damp mountain meadows. In the garden it likes full sun, although it will tolerate some shade, and needs moisture throughout the spring and early summer. Very happy in heavier soils. They like a moist spring and flowering, followed by a dry dormancy. Let the leaves start to lose colour before cutting them back. They prefer not to be disturbed once established but do set seed freely and will spread themselves in this way. Cream flowered in May/June 36" (90cm) tall.
Planting instructions
The bulbs are often not entirely symetrical or even sized, and flower at quite a small size. Plant them about 4" (10cm)deep, 9" (22cm) apart in groups of 5 or more in a humus-rich, moisture retentive soil, in either a sunny position or in half shade. If you do not want them to seed about remove the flower head after flowering. |
