Crocus chrysanthus Blue Pearl

A lovely goblet shaped flower with a soft lavender-blue exterior, silvery blue inside

C.chrysanthus is found in Turkey and the Balkans, and there are many different forms and hybrids in cultivation.  C. chrysanthus Blue Pearl has silvery blue petals with a yellow throat and soft lavender-blue outer tepals, 2-4 inches long.   There are 5 to 7 grey-green leaves, each with a wide keel, produced with the flowers and still green after they have gone.  Each corm may have up to 4 flowers.  In the wild they grew in turf or in sparse woods, and they like a well draining position in poor to moderately fertile soil, where they will not be disturbed. In UK conditions they need well drained soils with a summer drought, keeping the bulb dormant, dry and safe. Blue with yellow throat, flowering February/March 4" (9cm)

Planting instructions

Plant 8-10 cm (3-4in) deep in a small tight groups, 2 or 3 bulbs only 1.5" (3cm) apart repeated at larger intervals. Full sun and gritty, well drained soil.  Do beware of mice and squirrel attack.
