This is another crocus with very contrasting colours. Flowering slightly later than most. The white petals have a centre of dark blue and a deep mauve on the outside with a faint white edging. This is a form of C. chrysanthus, the bluer colouring possibly coming from hybridisation with C. biflorus. Raised by Mr G H Hageman of Heemstede, Holland. Both species grow in turf and under scrub, C. chrysanthus in Turkey and Balkans, and C.biflorus all the way from Greece to Persia. C. chrysanthus Lady Killer will tolerate slight shade, and does well in rock gardens and or amongst other perennials where it will not be disturbed. White and mauve, 3"-4" (7-10cm) tall, flowering February/March.
Planting instructions
Plant 8-10 cm (3-4in) deep in a small tight groups, 2 or 3 bulbs only 1.5" (4cm) apart repeated at larger intervals. Full sun and gritty, well drained soil. Do beware of mice and squirrel attack. |
