When open to the sun, C.chrysanthus Romance has buttery-yellow petals, darker towards the base, with orange divided stigma. When closed, its inner petals are chrome yellow with a purplish sheen growing up from the base. The species, C. chrysanthus, is from Turkey and the Balkans, where it grows on open hills and meadows or in shrub and sparse woods. In Britain it likes sun, although it grows in part shade and a well drained position, with not too fertile soil. It will naturalise and grows well in rock gardens where it will not be disturbed by digging etc. Flowering Feb/March, 3"-4" (7-10cm) tall.
Planting instructions
Plant 8-10 cm (3-4in) deep in a small tight groups, 2 or 3 bulbs only 1.5" (4cm) apart repeated at larger intervals. Full sun and gritty, well drained soil. Do beware of mice and squirrel attack. |
