Crocuses need full light and open conditions to keep them short and ‘tight’. Gardeners need to beware mice and squirrels but the larger ‘Dutch’ forms can be planted more deeply and have bigger bulbs that are less predated upon. The tommasinianus forms generally escape this problem as they are particularly vigorous and self seeding
