Originating in Mexico these selected varieties are a world away from their forebears, but they can provide a heady and exotic mix that can spice up a summer border with dramatic colours, bold forms and often stunning combinations of flower and foliage. But treat them well for the best results: they need it warm and any frost in the spring will turn them to mush so early protection is essential. They grow rapidly, so a well-fed soil is a must, and for that they need some moisture, especially to get going. But once established they seem to need little more than deadheading in the summer to promote more flowers. Winter protection will depend on your attitude to risk, some now leave Dahlias under a mulch and rely on luck, others lift the tubers, dry them off and store them frost free over winter. You have a good 9 months to decide, so enjoy the show! Work on 18”spacing between plants. Detailed care instructions will come with all Dahlia orders!
