The only Erythronium native to Europe, the Dog's Tooth Violet, so-called from the shape of its tubers. Grows in woodland, and likes shade and good humus-rich soil. Green leaves up to 6" (15m) long and somewhat oval in shape, beautifully mottled with brown, and blue-green,. The flowers are pink and lilac, sometimes white, with purplish or bluish anthers, and droop gracefully from short stems. Flowering March/April.
Planting instructions
Do not let the tubers dry out and plant in a cool, well-drained position where they will not become sun-baked in summer. Ideal under shrubs and trees, which remove excess moisture in summer. Plant 3- 4" (8-10cm) apart. Succeeds in almost any light soil, preferring one that is rich in humus. |
