Tulipa acuminata
Long twisted, narrow, finely pointed petals in red yellow and green.

They can only be described as probably the most spectacular specie tulip available. The twisted, needle pointed petals of red and yellow suffused with green are simply unique. Known in the Ottoman Empire since the 17th century though the RHS dictionary suggests that it is not a wild species. A group of them really do provide the resemblance to fire from which its name of Fire Flame Tulip arises, also known as the Horned Tulip. It is reportedly resistant to being eaten by deer, and the flowers are good for cutting. It would grow best in reasonably light soil in full sun, with a drier summer rest. Flowers in late April and early May, 15-18" (45 cm) tall.

Planting instructions

Plant the long slender bulbs about 3" ( 7cm)deep and 2" (5cm) apart in a drier bed where they will get the sun and a dry summer rest.
