Tulipa bakeri Lilac Wonder
A glossy leaved species type Tulip with yellow and deep-pink flowers.

Darker flowered than T. saxatilis to which this is closely related, from Rhodes, Crete and areas of SW Turkey in rocky places. This hybrid was raised in 1926. The leaves are similarly broad, dark glossy green with bulbs that are often stoloniferous forming good sized patches when undisturbed in the right conditions. The flowers are 2-3" (5-7cm) wide with up to four per stem with a broad butter yellow central zone surrounded by darker pink-lilac when they flower in late April and early May. Completely dependable in the south, it does come early into leaf and in very late springs maybe less dependable in northern areas. The whole plant is about 6" (15cm) tall.

Planting instructions

Plant the bulbs about 3" (7cm) deep and 2" (5cm) apart in a sunny site and well drained soils, perhaps near a south or west facing wall in cold gardens.
