The species tulips from the families T. linifolia, T. maximoviczii, T.clusiana & T. batalinii are all closely related and will all cross pollinate, and there is some debate about the original hybridisation that led to the named varieties available. The species plants occur in Iran, Uzbekistan & Turkestan and are named by the describer (regal in 1889) after Dr Batalin who was curator at the St Petersburg Imperial Botanical Gardens from 1870-1896.

The first hybrids were registered in 1901. Bronze Charm is a bronzed peach colour (again, as with Bright Gem, there is a seasonal variation due to temperature) but they are both lovely endearing small tulips for the front of borders or rockery like situations. The small bulbs are planted 3" (7cm) deep and about 2-3" (5-7cm) apart, so allow for a least 15 per square foot. They flower in late April and early May, as with all dwarf tulips beware of mice or squirrels attracted by the carbohydrate reserves in the bulb in late autumn.

Planting instructions

Plant the small bulbs about 3" (7cm) deep and 2"-3" (5-7cm) apart in sunny well drained soil to flower in late April and early May. 10" (25cm) tall.  Beware of squirrel or mice damage.
